Stent Graft Insertion: representative Treatment of St. Mary’s Cardiovascular Center
‘Stent Graft Insertion’ procedure has openeda new chapter of aortic aneurysm care
Aortic Aneurysm CareAortic aneurysm refers to the condition which a part of long cylindrical tube like aorta is disfigured (dilated) as a shape of a bag. Aorta serves as the main passageway of supplying oxygen-rich blood to the entire body as it is directly connected to the heart as well as to the major organs (brain, liver, stomach and small intestine) by blood vessels. The formation of aortic aneurysm on the wall of aorta can be life threatening regardless of its location if the condition of aneurysm worsens over time and is torn.
Once the aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body ruptures, only 50% of patients arrives hospital alive, and the survival rate of the admitted patients after the surgery is less than 50~60%. For Kim (76) who made it to the hospital alive with stable blood pressure despite her old age received stent graft instead of sternotomy without general anesthesia or a chest incision to reduce risks of surgery dramatically.
Stent graft can increase the safely of surgery on elderly patients compared to laparotomy. No matter how well the surgery is done, low resilience of elderly patients increases the chance of complications, and this is why surgical procedure with less and small incision is absolutely preferred especially on elderly patients.
In the past, to remove aortic aneurysm, major operation was required – replacing deformed aorta with artificial vessel through an incision as large as 50~60cm from one’s chest to stomach. Now stent graft is replacing high-risk surgery. Without general anesthesia or a chest incision, a stent ‘mesh tube’ is inserted through a femoral artery in the groin. When the stent reaches the aneurysm site, the sheath is withdrawn leaving the graft in place. The graft then expands against the walls of artery to form a normal healthy shape.
Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital of the Catholic University of Korea has succeeded the surgery without extracorporeal circulation through heart-lung-machine. Performing extracorporeal circulation to temporarily arrest heart before the surgery generally causes complications due to the usage of heart-lung-machine. Thus, eliminating extracorporeal circulation process can reduce recovery period, inflammatory response as well as post surgery complications. Heart-lung-machine is not used on stent graft procedure.
Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital uses the latest stent graft technique successfully on aortic aneurysm cases and even for the complicated cases like aortic aneurysm rupture.

Professor Dong Hwan Lee’s team in Incheon St. Mary hospital operates robotic prostate cancer surgery
Starting a new era of robotic prostate
cancer surgery in Incheon and Bucheon area
According to the rate of cancer, the data presented last year by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the number of new prostate cancer patients has increased in the last 10 years for more than four times from 1,800 in the year of 2001 to 7,847 in the year of 2010. Nowadays, prostate cancer is the 5th frequently occurring cancer among the male. For cancer incident rate, prostate cancer takes the 5th place with 3.9%, chasing right after Japan (4th) and the United States (1st).
However it is not easy to operate prostate cancer surgery since the prostate is located right under bladder. Because of its precise location, robot surgery is gathering big attention as the surgery puts micro camera and operating tools through a small hole. Investigation into practicing domestic robot surgery shows that among esophageal cancer, kidney cancer, stomach cancer, rectal cancer, and prostate cancer (average death rate 0.09%), the death rate of prostate cancer was the lowest (0.07%) and it was even lower than that of an abdominal operation.
Professor Dong Hwan Lee from urology department in the Catholic Medical University of Incheon St. Mary’s hospital, who succeeded in implementing prostate cancer surgery with robot for the first time in Incheon and Bucheon area, said “The abdominal operation was common, but the surgery was not easy because prostate cancer is hidden by big vessels in front of pelvis.” Also he mentioned, “The prostate cancer needs delicate operation since ejaculatory duct and urethra penetrate through the middle of prostate. This delicacy is possible with the aid of robot by enlarging the sight to a certain ratio and maintaining proper moving distance for operating tools.”
The era of robot surgery of prostate cancer has finally come to Incheon and Bucheon area.
The robotic surgery center in Catholic Medical University of Incheon St. Mary’s hospital introduced Da Vinci si Surgical System, the newest version of robot surgical system, in 2011 for the first time in Incheon and Bucheon area. The system is operated to thyroid cancer, uterine cancer, colorectal cancer and more, and has succeeded in heart surgery despite the complication of the surgery. Professor Lee’s success in robotic prostate cancer surgery greatly contributes to genuine robotic surgery era.
Professor Lee mentions, “The robotic surgery is mainly conducted to prostate cancer and thyroid cancer, and it is very effective to small sized organs. It minimizes the damage to other parts while removing the parts that cancer cell spread. This small operating part also results in faster recovery compared to abdominal operation.”
In addition, the number of robotic surgery was 450,000 worldwide last year, four times more than what it was four years ago. It is known that four out of five surgeries on prostate cancer were done with robot in United States.

Inha University Hospital, “Successful Specialization for Cardio-cerebrovascular Diseases.”
![]() |
| Inha University Hospital |
Selected by the Ministry
of Health and Welfare, and other professional organizations … Evaluated to be
“Excellent” by Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service
Inha
University Hospital (Director Seung-rim Park) is developing itself to be a
specialized medical institution for cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. The hospital
was selected to be the cardio-cerebrovascular medical center in the Incheon
area by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in the late November, and in December,
it was selected to be the “excellent hospital for acute stroke and myocardial
infarction” by Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service. With these
good news, the hospital promotes policies to attract cardio-cerebrovascular
patients from abroad, and aims to be the medical institution of the Northeast
Asia.
Recognized for the
Hospital’s Vision and Possibility of Development under “Cardio-cerebrovascular
Diseases.”
Inha University Hospital,
selected to be the cardio-cerebrovascular diseases center in the Incheon area,
receives funding of about six thousand million won for the next five years. Director
Park says, “as we prepare for this business to take off, we understood that the
management of blind spots for cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, the highest
death rate in this country, medical service with too much focus on call
patients and actue treatment, and low awareness of early symptoms of
cardio-cerebrovascular diseases were the problems.”
Park added, “In order to
solve these problems, the hospital established 24-hour waiting system, general
preventive management for cardio-cerebrovascular and early and continuous
treatments. Ultimately the hospital will contribue to the promotion of health
for Incheon residents by affectively connecting the community’s relative
resources.”
Additionally, Inha
University Hospital was selected to be the “excellent hospital for acute stroke
and myocardial infarction” by Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service.
HIRA evaluates 113 medical institutions’ statuses on acute stroke and acute
myocardial infarction and provides incentives to those who are evaluated to be
“excellent.” Inha University Hospital was evaluated to be the top level for
acute stroke high level for acute myocardial infarction. With these
evaluations, Inha University Hospital was verified of its medical quality from
the nation.
Director
Park mentioned, “With the sucessful establishment of cardio-cerebrovascular
diseases center of this area and the satisfactory evaluation result, the
hospital will offer new paradigm for cardio-cerebrovascular disease management
by actively participating in preventing and managing cardio-cerebrovascular
diseases.”
Plans
to Develop Medical Tour Business Model
With
these evaluation results, the hospital is planning to attract
cardio-cerebrovascular patients across the world. The hospital was selected to
be Leading Medical Technology Development Project to attract overseas patients
under “cardio cerebro-vascular disease,” hosted by the Ministry of Health and
Welfare. The hospital is trying to attract overseas patients with Incheon
Medical Tourism Foundation and major medical institutions of the area. Leading
Medical Technoology Development Project is the project that the country
provides marketing and infrastructure to excellent medical technology with
potential in order to prepare for the country’s rapid growth of medical tourism
industry and diversify unequal regional distribution of patients.
As
part of this business, the hospital invited a cardio-cerebrovascular patient
from Russia with the help of Incheon Medical Tourism Foundation, Russian
agency, and various press, and provided treatment fees. The patient chosen for
this project was in a condition that needed heart surgery immediately; if she
delayed the surgery, there was a high chance she would suffer heart attack.
Despite such critical condition, she could not undergo any surgery due to high
cost and backward cardio-cerebrovascular medical technology of Russia. With the
help of Inha University Hospital, she was able to successfully undergo a heart
surgery. She mentioned, “I was touched by such heartwarming medical service
from Inha University Hospital, and I was able to go through the treatments
comfortably with Russian medical coordinator translating and guding me. The
afteraffects was minimal and the recovery fast because there was no need to
open up the chest thanks to excellent medical technology.”
The
hospital strengthened its network with the local medical tourism agency, and
wishes to carry out overseas promotion of its excellent treatment of
cardio-cerebrovascular diseases based on global marketing network. Director
Park emphasized, “Not only will the hospital do its best to prevent and manage
cardio-cerebrovascular diases of the Incheon community, but it will also take
responsibility of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases of the world citizens and
strive to become the global medical institution.”

Cardiovascular Center that provides 24-hour urgent coronary intervention for acute myocardial infarction
Cardiovascular
Center that provides 24-hour urgent coronary intervention for acute myocardial
infarction
The
first grade for three years in acute myocardial infarction treatment
The Catholic medical university of Korea
Incheon St. Mary’s hospital directly contacts cardiovascular center as heart
blood-vessel patient arrives, and all system is processed for urgent cardiovascular
patient.
The cardiovascular center in the Catholic
medical university of Korea Incheon St. Mary’s hospital consists of twenty
doctors from internal medicine of heart and cardiothoracic surgery and is made
for cooperating process for patients. As patient arrives at the emergency room,
professional team of the cardiovascular center is directly contacted and all
the examination is done in the favor of patients so that urgent inspection is
possible.
It takes about half an hour to diagnose the
patient and decide which treatment should be done.
The reason for this fast treatment is
because this emergency action is directly related to the life of a patient.
As result, the team members of
cardiovascular center of Incheon St. Mary’s hospital live near the hospital. Although
it is not an easy task, the doctors understand that quick action is required in
order to save patients’ lives.
Thanks to this system, the Catholic medical
university of Korea Incheon St. Mary’s hospital has been rated as the first
grade facility for the last three years since 2008 on the evaluation over acute
myocardial infarction done by Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service.
The evaluation in 2010 is especially important since superior general hospitals
were also considered.
The acute myocardial infarction patients
who were hospitalized through emergency room were surveyed. The number of surveyed
institutions was 189 total (44 of superior general hospital and 145 of general
hospital), and only 29 hospitals received the first grade.
The evaluation covered the treatments from
first day of 2010 till last day of the year and considered seven categories
including the number of acute myocardial infarction hospitalization, the rate
of injecting clotbuster in 30 minutes, the rate of practicing primary PCI in 90
minutes, the rate of prescribing aspirin when leaving the hospital, the rate of
prescribing beta blocker when leaving the hospital, and the rate of death in 30
days from starting hospitalization.
