What is a Stroke?

Stroke indicates neurological symptom, of which the part of the brain is damaged as the blood vessels that provide blood to the brain is blocked (cerebral infarction) or poped (cerebral hemorrhage). Stroke is the second highest death causing disease and out of all the single diseases, it is the most important cause of death in Korea. Once fallen sick from stroke, one gets hemiparalysis or speech impediment, if not death. Stroke usually occurs among older people but the occurrence rate is increasing among 20’s and 30’s as well.

-5 symptoms of a Stroke-
1) One-sided Paralysis (arm-leg, face)
2) Sudden consciousness disorder, speech impediment
3) Sudden visual impairment
4) Sudden dysbasia, parallel disorder, dizziness
5) Suddenly occurring severe headache

What is intravascular treatment?
Unlike the existing brain surgery, intravascular treatment treats stroke without opening one’s head and is spreading worldwide these days. Inha University Hospital has been practicing intravascular treatment (cerebrovascular intervention) with high technology digital blood vessel imaging system since April of 2010.

So far, cerebral infarction patients have been treated with medication to penetrate blocked blood vessels or stop cerebral vessels from narrowing. However, as intravascular treatment has been possible, patients who show no improvement with medication can also be aggressively treated. In the case of DT, with narrowing cerebral vessels, stent or balloons can be inserted to widen the narrowed parts, and the blocked vessels can be reached by catheter, and thus cerebral blood flow is improved. Particularly, cerebrovascular stent has been made available in Korea and the patients can thus receive precise and stable treatments.

Stent Enthesis for Cerebrovascular Stenosis
In the case of cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral aneurysm can be treated with intravascular treatment. Cerebral aneurysm is when a part of cerebral vessels has swollen up like a balloon, and it occurs around the weak walls of the vessels; when it ruptures, it causes cerebral hemorrhage. When cerebral aneurysm ruptures, 30% of the patients die with hemorrhage. Therefore, preventive treatments for cerebral aneurysm have been carried out with detachable coil (intravascular surgery) without opening a head. 95% of the time, cerebral aneurysm can be found through CTA or MRA, and the preventive treatments can safely be carried out without cerebral hemorrhage occurs.
